Why stay in Maadi?

Maadi offers something rare in Cairo: walkable streets, mature gardens, international schools and a mix of local and expat life. The neighbourhood is split into several areas, but New Maadi (Maadi al-Gedida) and Sarayat are especially popular for short-term stays because they are calm, secure and close to main roads.

• Space: larger apartments with balconies, gardens and parking.
• Safety: quiet, patrolled residential blocks and embassy presence.
• Location: 20–30 minutes to the Pyramids, downtown Cairo and the airport.
• Amenities: supermarkets, pharmacies, gyms and cafés within walking distance.

Getting around

Uber and Careem work well in Maadi and are the easiest way for visitors to move around. The Maadi Metro station connects to downtown in about 25 minutes. For the Pyramids or the airport, a private car or ride-hailing app is usually fastest.

Food and cafés

Road 9 is the main commercial strip: bakeries, coffee shops, bookstores and restaurants. Nearby you will find everything from Egyptian koshary and foul to Italian, Lebanese and East Asian kitchens. Many cafés are laptop-friendly, making Maadi a favourite for remote workers.

What to do nearby

• The Pyramids of Giza: 30–40 minutes by car; go early morning to avoid crowds.
• The Nile Corniche: walk, run or take a felucca boat ride at sunset.
• Downtown Cairo: the Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili and historic architecture.
• Wadi Degla: a nearby nature reserve for hiking and cycling.

• Carry small notes of Egyptian pounds for tips and small purchases.
• Most visitors need a visa on arrival or an e-visa before travelling.
• The best time to visit Cairo is October through April, when temperatures are mild.
